An open-wound globe that lets the bulb show through, so the light is dappled rather than boxed in.

Bamboo strands wound over one another in an open, irregular weave into a full sphere, hung on a black cord from a slim black canopy. Lit, the bulb shows through the gaps and the strands throw a loose, dappled pattern across the ceiling and walls in every direction; unlit, it reads as a pale ball of wound cord, light and airy. At 25 cm across it is a mid-size piece — a bedroom, a hallway, a reading corner, or in a cluster of two or three at different heights over a stair or a table.

Why it works

• A full sphere, so it patterns the ceiling as much as the walls and the floor

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included, and because the bulb shows through the weave, a warm 2700 K filament-style LED shows the weave best — a bare bright bulb will glare. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. The winding is irregular by design, so the pattern of gaps and the exact diameter vary from piece to piece and from the photographs.
