A black wire diamond on a wood socket, for kitchens and counters that want an edge.

A diamond-shaped cage of black iron wire hung from a natural wood socket cover on a plain black cord. There is no shade, so the bulb is the whole show: with a filament LED in it the cage throws a sharp lattice of lines across the ceiling and walls, and switched off it reads as a small sculpture. It is the first metal piece in our range, and it earns its place because it does what the woven shades cannot - it gives a room a hard, graphic line instead of a soft one.

• Bulb: not included - a clear filament LED, 4 to 6 W, shows the cage best

Why it works

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. The bulb is fully exposed, so choose one you are happy to look at, and keep the wattage low - it is a decorative light, not a task light. The cord is cut to length at install and is not adjustable afterwards. Wire spacing and paint finish vary a little from the photographs.
