Vertical bamboo strips bound over two rings, hung from a turned wooden ceiling base. It is built like a lantern rather than a basket, and that changes what it does to the light: the gaps between the strips are straight and even, so it casts long vertical bands down a wall instead of the fine speckle a weave gives you. At 20 cm wide and 23 cm tall it is a small fixture — a bedside, a hallway, a stairwell landing, or a row of three down a narrow counter.

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included, and a warm 2700 K LED shows the slats best — a cool bulb flattens them. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. Strip spacing varies slightly from piece to piece, which is what makes the shadow pattern its own.
