The lantern’s slats, bowed into a pear, so the stripes curve instead of dropping straight.

Vertical bamboo strips bound over rings and bowed outward into a teardrop, hung on a white cord from a white ceiling base. It uses the same straight slats as the lantern, but the belly of the shape does something different to the light: the strips fan apart at the widest point and gather at the neck, so the shadow bands widen and narrow as they travel down a wall rather than falling in even stripes. At 20 cm wide and 20 cm tall it is a small fixture — a bedside, a hallway, a reading corner, or a pair over a narrow counter.

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included, and a warm 2700 K LED shows the slats best — a cool bulb flattens them. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. Strip spacing varies slightly from piece to piece, which is what makes the shadow pattern its own.
