A deep dome that turns into a lantern when you switch it on.

Bamboo cane knitted into a deep dome, hung from a turned wooden ceiling base. Lit, the whole shade glows and drops a fine lattice of shadow onto whatever sits underneath it. Unlit, it reads as a plain warm basket, which is the reason it survives in a room that already has a lot going on. At 26 cm across and 16 cm deep it hangs close rather than dominating — right over a bedside, a hallway or one end of a counter, and better still in a run of two or three.

Why it works

• The depth is what makes the lattice: a shallow shade throws the pattern out sideways, this one drops it onto the table
• Small enough to hang in a pair or a trio without the run reading as heavy
• Wood base rather than a painted metal cap, so it matches the shade instead of interrupting it
• Cord shortens at the base, so the drop is set on site rather than fixed
• Warm and neutral when off, which is most of the day

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included — a warm 2700 K LED shows the lattice best. Keep it out of bathrooms and anywhere it will sit in steam, because bamboo is a dry-room material. Weave spacing and exact diameter vary a little from the photographs.

Voltage. Rated 90–260 V, which covers the 120 V used in the United States. An earlier version of this page said 220 V and declined to sell into a 120 V market. That was true of a different supplier’s listing of the same shade, and it is why this fixture spent time unavailable. Same dome, sourced from a listing that states the wider range.
