A narrow column that draws a vertical line into a room.

Woven bamboo in a long, narrow column on a round wood ceiling cap, hung on an adjustable cord. The height is the whole point of it: hung low it puts a vertical stroke into a room that is otherwise all horizontals, which is why it works at the end of a counter, in a stairwell, or as a pair either side of a bed. At 18 cm wide it takes up almost no visual space for its size, and the weave throws its lattice up the wall as well as down.

Why it works

• Tall and narrow, so it adds height to a room without adding bulk

• The wood cap is the same tone as the shade, so the fixture reads as one material rather than a shade under a metal disc
• The bulb is in the box, and the warm setting is the one that shows the weave best

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. It is a tall shade, so check your ceiling height before hanging it low over a walkway. The colour temperature is changed by switching the light off and on again at the wall, not by a remote. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. Weave spacing and exact diameter vary a little from the photographs.
