Woven Bamboo Bell Pendant — 26cm

A woven bell that sends most of its light straight down, where a table needs it.

Bamboo woven in horizontal ribs into a bell — a narrow neck at the top flaring to a wide open mouth — hung on a black cord from a black ceiling canopy. Lit, the open mouth throws a bright pool onto whatever is underneath and the ribs let a softer glow through the sides; unlit, it is a pale ribbed cone, plain and quiet. At 26 cm across and 26 cm tall it is a mid-size piece — over a dining table in a pair or a row, a kitchen island, or on its own over a small round table.

Why it works

• The flare aims the light down, so a table under it is lit for eating and reading rather than washed from the side
• As wide as it is tall, so it reads as a bell and not as a hat or a bowl
• Horizontal ribs put the pattern on the shade itself, not only on the wall
• 150 cm of cord is enough to hang it low over a table from a standard ceiling
• Black hardware disappears against a dark ceiling and draws a clean line against a white one

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture and needs an existing ceiling box; have an electrician hang it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included. The mouth is open, so the bulb is visible when you look up at it — a warm 2700 K LED shows the weave best and is kinder to the eye than a bright cool one. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. Weave spacing and exact diameter vary a little from the photographs.
