An open weave, so the light comes out freckled.

The shade is thin strips of bamboo woven over a metal frame, and the spacing of the weave differs a little from one to the next. Switched on, the gaps in the weave throw a soft speckled pattern across the ceiling and down the walls. Switched off it reads as a plain warm basket. At 36 cm it suits a bedside, a reading corner, a breakfast nook or a hallway; hung in a row of two or three over a kitchen island the patterns overlap and the whole ceiling picks it up.

Why it works

• The weave is the light: gaps in the bamboo cast the pattern, so the fixture does something a plain shade cannot
• Small enough to hang where a full chandelier would crowd the room
• Reads as a warm neutral object when it is off, which matters in a room that already has a lot going on
• Wide voltage range, so it works on 120 V without a converter
• Repeats well — two or three in a row over an island look deliberate rather than sparse

Before you buy

This is a hardwired ceiling fixture. It needs an existing ceiling box, and if you are not comfortable working at one, have an electrician hang it. No bulb is included; a warm 2700 K LED shows the weave best, and a cool white flattens it. Bamboo is a dry-room material — keep it out of bathrooms and away from anywhere it will sit in steam. The diameter and the weave spacing vary slightly from the photographs.
