Thin bamboo sticks set in a grid on each of four sides, over white panels, into a square box open at the top and bottom — the shape of a Japanese shoji screen made small. It hangs on a cord from a straight solid-wood arm on a square wood backplate. Lit, the panels glow evenly and the grid prints a sharp lattice on the wall behind; unlit, the pale sticks over white sit quiet and geometric against the warm wood. At 15 cm square and 25 cm tall it is the most upright of the three arm sconces — a stair, a corridor, either side of a doorway, or a pair over a low sideboard.

Why it works

Before you buy

This is a hardwired wall fixture and needs an existing wall box; have an electrician fit it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included — a warm 2700 K LED shows the panels best; because the top is open, a bulb that sits low in the box looks better than a tall one. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. Stick spacing varies a little from the photographs.
