Bamboo Cage Wall Sconce — 20cm

A bamboo-strip cage over a blue-and-white liner, hung from a solid wood arm.

Flat bamboo strips bound into a ring at the top and bowed out into a rounded cage, with a fabric liner printed in blue and white sitting inside it. The shade hangs on a cord from a straight solid-wood arm fixed to a square wood backplate, so it reads as a small pendant brought to the wall. Lit, the liner turns the whole cage into a soft lantern and the strips print fine bars of shadow on the wall behind; unlit, it is a pale basket on a block of wood. At 20 cm wide and 23 cm tall it suits a bedside, a hallway, a landing or a pair either side of a mirror.

Why it works

• The liner is the difference from an open cage: the bulb is hidden and the light comes out even and soft instead of in stripes
• Hung from an arm rather than fixed to a plate, so the shade sits clear of the wall and lights it from in front
• A pattern on the liner gives it something to look at by day, when a plain shade is just a shape
• Wood arm and backplate match the bamboo, so the whole fixture reads as one warm material
• Small enough to hang in a pair without the two reading as heavy

Before you buy

This is a hardwired wall fixture and needs an existing wall box; have an electrician fit it if you are not comfortable working at one. No bulb is included — a warm 2700 K LED shows the liner best. Bamboo is a dry-room material, so keep it out of bathrooms and away from steam. The print on the liner and the exact spacing of the strips vary a little from the photographs.
